The black pieces are stained a dark brown and the white pieces are left the natural wood color. The pieces are nicely weighted for stability on the chess board and have green felt pads on the bottom. The chess case has two large drawers with individual compartments for storing all 32 pieces separately. The compartments are lined with a soft velour beige material.
